In continuing this 20 Days Of Chill Writing Challenge, I have been participating and it’s now time for a new post. As you may remember last Monday I started this challenge and have now completed 8 days worth of the challenge and you can read them both by checking out 20 Days Of Chill.

Today is a new day and a new challenge and today’s theme is:

Slim pickings

Guess today’s theme is well slim pickings. I guess this could be interrupted any way you want but when I read this I originally thought of the famous actor Slim Pickens who is most notably known for his roles in Dr. Strangelove and Blazing Saddles.

For those who don’t remember who or which character he portrayed here is a video clip of him, he’s the one with the head wrap on.

As I’m mentioning him I also remember another famous actor and I actually thought they were the same person for a brief moment because well, I wasn’t thinking. And that being Gabby Hayes. Both being great character actors. Hayes on the other hand you may not remember as much because he passed away in 1969 but he was a regular in various western movies as well as movies with John Wayne. Here is a video of some of his bits quotes:

And here’s a video of him talking to a horse…

Talking of Gabby Hayes, he was born in a town called Stannards, which is right outside of Wellsville. With him being one of the most famous people to come from the area they held an annual event to honor him. According to Wikipedia..

Every year in early July, from 1983 through 1989, “Gabby Hayes Days” were celebrated in Wellsville, New York. The event featured a street sale, square dancing, and Gabby Hayes look-alike contests for adults and children. This celebration was eventually merged into the mid-July Wellsville Balloon Rally and gradually disappeared. A street is also named after him in Wellsville, Gabby Hayes Lane.

Sadly of course this ended when I was 6 years old, and could never grow a Gabby Hayes beard. But maybe one day they’ll bring back that event.

I guess that answers today’s theme of slim pickens. What do you think?
