A week after visiting Minnewaska State Park in Ulster County I just heard the devastating news that there’s a fire in and around the area.

According to reports a 300 acre fire has engulfed the area. And even New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo released a statement Sunday saying he directed additional emergency personnel to the blaze in hopes of building a perimeter around the fire, which was moving south in a narrow band within the preserve. Sam’s Point, which totals 5,400 acres, is noted for its waterfalls, elevated lake, cliffs and dense forest, in addition to being home to various bird species.

We had visited the area back in the fall, and mainly the Minnewaska area. Walked around and took in the beautiful views and sights. This is quite devastating news to hear. News that you usually hear about happening in other states like the countless fires in California and such.

While I’ve never visited the specific part of Sam’s Point where the fire is, I have driven through and around the area.

To read more about the fire here a few links: a Times Union report, a Daily Freeman report, a Times Herald-Record report.
