In the alley I venture
A place I’ve been once before
Why am I returning
The demons are waiting

In between places I’ve been
Apartments I’ve slept in
Stores I’ve browsed
The demons are waiting

There’s a dumpster filled
There’s a wooden pallet leaning
A mouse pauses for a moment
The demons are waiting

An associate yawns
A friend awakens
My mind wanders
The demons are waiting

The night seemed to hurry
The wind was a worry
The shop owner is hating
The demons are waiting

My life wasn’t always this way
I had promise
And dreams
The demons are waiting

I’ll shower at the Y today
Dig through McDonald’s dumpster
Visit the library
The demons are waiting

I remember meeting the mayor
He had a suit on
I’ve worn this shirt for 6 months
The demons are waiting

Realization of who I’ve become
Has scared me
But
The demons are waiting

There’s a guy with a suit
He once stared me down
But I turned away
The demon is me
